Sam Cascio the country’s oldest working bellhop turned 95 on a Wednesday. The Chicago Hilton marked the day with cake and a half day off. City officials renamed the nearby street Sam Cascio Drive, honoring his long service since 1927 at the Stevens Hotel.
Japan reports the Antarctic ozone hole expanded sharply with 4.3 times more destruction than a decade earlier and a total area 13 times larger, while depletion grows globally though tropical zones remain less affected. Scientists cite CFCs and Montreal Protocol aims, with cooperation from Japan’s meteorological agency.
Former British Columbia premier Bill Vander Zalm, 58, was cleared of criminal breach of trust over the sale of Fantasy Garden World to Tan Yu. The judge ruled his actions were foolish but not criminal. Vander Zalm thanked supporters and spoke of going home to his family.

The National Energy Board ruled that the California Public Utilities Commission must honor long term contracts with Canadian gas producers. U.S. buyers face blocked cheaper spot prices and may shift to southern California supply or domestic output, as Alberta’s energy minister notes possible risk. The NEB also ordered shipments stopped at the border unless covered by existing contracts.
Alberta Premier Don Getty warns next week's constitutional lunch with Prime Minister Mulroney and other premiers may isolate Alberta on Senate reform. He seeks an expanded agenda including a social charter and Quebec demands, insisting a elected equal-Senate be part of any deal. Reform Leader Preston Manning counters that constitutional change requires seven provinces with at least 50 percent of the population and voter consent.
