Warden slain as riot erupts at Baja California prison

In La Mesa prison near Tijuana a warden and deputy were shot dead along with three guards in what authorities say was a plot by drug kingpin Marcio Enrique Alvarez. A shootout left several dead and many wounded as soldiers and police battled prisoners in the yard.

Alberta Winter Games profit for Medicine Hat tops 74 thousand

The Medicine Hat Alberta Winter Games yielded about 74 000 in profit with grants totaling 16 400 for equipment and facilities plus a 50 000 provincial legacy and 7 400 earlier grants. A final audit is pending though reports show a 21 000 profit, with 3 600 remaining after expenses turned over to the Alberta Games Council.

Rhodesian raid leaves 19 dead in Mozambique

Rhodesian troops killed 19 people in a two pronged raid in southwestern Mozambique. Helicopters and jet fighters backed the assault and the Mozambique army reported insurgents also abducted women and children from a research station.
