Premier W. Aberhart leads a city hall meeting with nine ME Manufacturers Wholesalers and Retailers on a plan to issue Prosperity Bonds to boost purchasing power and revive business. He notes no borrowing and a cautious start, with questions from the audience on circulation and impact.
Dr Walter Morrish a Liberal physician was elected to Alberta's legislature from Edmonton filling the seat vacated by W R Howson. He won on the first count with 9802 votes, defeating Unity Front Alderman Margaret Crang and CCF candidate H D Ainlay. Morrish attacked Social Credit allies described as Communist supporters and urged debt relief and prosperity certificates opposition. He was born in 1890 in England and has practised in Edmonton for nine years. In British Columbia, Liberal Mark Connelly won Omineca by-election with 806 votes over CCF Sidney Godwin and Conservative Alfred Thompson.
Doors at the Arena open 7 p.m. for a Social Credit mass meeting starting 8 p.m. Whittred's band plays from 7:30 p.m. as a large audience gathers. Premier W Aberhart and Hon. W N Chant along with Hon. Lucien Maynard are listed as chief speakers.
Thousands gathered at Horse Guards Whitehall to witness King Edward VIII lead the trooping of the colors. Queen Mary and Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret watched from the Horse Guards arch as the King saluted. The day combined pageantry with royal mourning for King George.
Paris June 23 Premier Blum's government said it would push to hasten negotiations of regional mutual assistance pacts to safeguard Europe from war. The premier expressed a sincere desire to find a basis for agreement with Germany on a new security plan.
In Peiping a Japanese soldier armed with a bayonet forced Capt. Henry S. Jernigan of the U S Cavalry from a sidewalk to clear a path for civilians during a martial demonstration. Jernigan, attached to the embassy, escaped injury by thrusting the bayonet aside.
A wreck seven miles south of Conrad Montana left two men dead and two others injured. Victims are Stanley Sheppard 19 from Polson and William Gardipee 27 of Gold Butte. Injured are Arthur McGerry 21 and Charles Mulder 23 from Sweet Grass. The party was en route to Great Falls when the car skidded off the road. Arthur Gravelle, noted safe lock expert and former Renfrew mayor, died in Renfrew Ontario.
Premier Aberhart and ministers met in Mayor Bullivant’s office to discuss prosperity certificates or scrip for relief funds. The session included officials H J Noble city treasurer and comptroller and all council members. No decision was reached though hints suggested about 2800 dollars monthly in certificates replacing Edmonton’s 1900 cash for relief. council will decide soon.

In Ottawa June 23 C P J S Woodsworth C C F leader told Commons the RCMP under Sir James MacBrien used extreme measures to stop the unemployed trek at Regina last year without lawful authority The commission allegedly blamed officials but did not condemn the police actions and the trek leaders were accused of no crimes The trek was halted by rail and road the protestors claim the Riot and its aftermath led to harsher measures and a call for a full investigation.
A forest fire near the new gold mining camp of Major L. T. Burwash at Yellow Knife bay, Great Slave Lake, was reported under control with no damage to camp property. Radio message quoted stated the fire around the camp is under control and has caused no harm so far.
Ottawa reports Prime Minister Mackenzie King will head Canada's delegation to the League of Nations assembly in Geneva in September to discuss re organization. He cannot attend the France Vimy memorial unveiling but will join the London conference next May. Ernest Lapointe will lead the Vimy delegation. Parliament could be recalled late in November if Geneva decisions require ratification.
Premier King said he found no evidence of an official leak over Canada’s sanctions stance. He defended the government, noting the Italian Rome station announced sanctions would be lifted a full day before MPs were told in the House.
