In Melfort a house fire killed five children aged 7 to 13 who suffocated and burned in their beds. Neighbor Guy Haney raised the alarm at 2 16 a m as volunteers battled the blaze. Coroner Dr. Albert Chandler ordered an inquest as RCMP investigate how the Aubin family escaped and whether arthritis impeded Mrs Aubin’s escape.
