A Manitoba town scarred by a Sunday tornado faced no immediate aid efforts. Officials consider action while Red Cross civil defence and Salvation Army volunteers assist. About 30 injured, homes destroyed, and key buildings wrecked as residents salvage belongings amid blackout.
Public safety committee backs a fixed truck route to Dunmore Hill via the old Black and White trail and Seventh Ave. Trucks would access South Railway St. or Ogilvie's mill to reach industry and cross Allowance Ave. The plan limits deliveries in downtown and removes heavy traffic from residential streets, with a two week study period.
The Medicine Hat fertilizer plant project grows from 22 million to about 30 million dollars as plans add processing steps based on natural gas. Flood irrigation began yesterday in the Medicine Hat district east and south of the city to flood former dryland acres. Water is available in the SMRD extension canal though some farmers fear later shortages. No water charges this year as the province provides a full year’s supply before charges. About 10 000 acres were classified for new irrigation this year, with crops mainly cereals flax and alfalfa. Irrigation in the Bow Island Burdett area began last Friday.
W. H. Ellis, retired Baptist minister and longtime local magistrate, is feted on his 76th birthday. Born in Brussels Ontario, he moved west in 1896 and served in Medicine Hat as minister of First Baptist before becoming police magistrate and juvenile court judge in 1924. He and Mrs. Ellis live at 460 Cambridge Street.
