Beaten Manitoba man seeks help from battered women shelters

A Winnipeg man, 57, says he has been repeatedly beaten by his girlfriend and has contacted police for help. Ontario doctors vow to fight bill ending extra billing

The Ontario legislature passed Bill 94, banning extra-billing beyond medicare rates by doctors amid a nine day doctors strike. A decade after Canada backed war crimes charges, Kurt Waldheim received diplomatic status in Ottawa. Ottawa reports show Canadian taxpayers paid about 3 400 per night for Prime Minister Brian Mulroney and wife at the Plaza Athenee during February 14 to 21 in Paris. Extra charges totaled 8 297 24 and a 2 550 per person average across a 54 member entourage. Vehicle rentals surpassed 109 000 with a fleet of chauffeur driven cars for the prime minister ministers MPs and regional officials. Mystery surrounds Grassy Lake twin elevator fire

Provincial fire investigators finished their probe into the Grassy Lake blaze, saying the cause remains undetermined. The June 11 fire started at the top of the twin grain elevator, destroying both structures and a fertilizer storage plant with about 1.5 million dollars in damage. Insurance investigators with the Alberta Wheat Pool will continue inquiries.

Winds halt airlift to Calgary plane wreckage

High winds kept rescue crews from reaching the Cessna 185 wreckage near Mount Galatea in Kananaskis Country. The pilots were Ken Wolff of Ponoka Alberta and Orval Pall of Calgary, missing since June 6. Bodies found, weather delaying further entry. Eleven other search casualties reported in two additional crashes during the operation.
