Balloon tests to study stratosphere ozone at White Sands

Preparations begin for a stratospheric observing system using a 25 mile high balloon and a 450 foot diameter payload. Dr James G Anderson of Harvard leads the project aiming for months long flights and solar powered energy.

Scientist proposes yo-yo platform to study stratosphere

The plan uses a suspended winch platform with a flywheel and 120 pounds of storage batteries for early tests. A generator during descent provides braking but cannot recharge the batteries due to absorption limits. Anderson aims to reduce uncertainties in stratospheric chemistry by wide ranging measurements across conditions and locations. A DuPont synthetic line makes the 12 mile tether possible, offering high strength with light weight.
