A crowded Stettler court heard Ray Cook face murder charges for the June killing of his father at the Cock residence. More than 200 Somerville College students received a typewritten circular offering a pregnancy insurance policy for five pounds a year with 250 pounds payout if pregnancy occurred. The note claimed secrecy and was posted to mail boxes, prompting a university inquiry by the proctors who termed it not a joke.
In Val d Or Quebec a damaged twin engine Beechcraft crashed while trying to land at an RCAF airfield. Co-pilot John Reid 21 Hudson Que sought help for pilot Wally McBroom 33 Pointe Claire Que who died in the wreck. Passenger Dan LaMothe Rouyn Que is believed killed. Reid is in hospital recovering from shock exposure and insect bites.
The LaMothe plane returning from Montreal to Rouyn diverted in poor visibility near Val d Or. It overshot the runway on approach and wreckage was found five miles southeast of the airfield after a long search. Pilot Reid and McBroom were LaMothe employees.
CALGARY CP reports D I Notkin deputy chief of the USSR state planning committee for oil and gas writes in a Canadian oil and gas trade magazine that the Soviet oil industry will triumph in world economic competition. He says Russia has cut the U S lead from 11 to 1 to 3 to 1 in 14 years and aims to quadruple oil output in 15 years with gas up 15 times and coal up 50 percent. Notkin cites a seven year program costing about 16 billion for geological prospecting and exploration and notes USSR has favorable conditions for productive oil and gas deposits while 60 million gallons of gasoline have been offered to Eastern Canadian distributors at 15 cents a gallon, drawing concern from Canadian oilmen.
Ottawa reports fourteen new paralytic polio cases in the week ending June 11 raising the national total to 121 versus 44 a year ago. Eight deaths were recorded this year, unchanged from 1959. New cases spread across Saskatchewan Newfoundland Manitoba Alberta and British Columbia with regional tallies listed.

A Toronto pilot, Colin Mason, was injured when his war-surplus Avenger torpedo bomber crashed near Victoriaville Quebec during a four-plane flight from Dumphy New Brunswick to the Montreal area. The Avengers, owned by Wheeler Airlines, were returning from a spruce budworm spraying contract in the Maritimes after encountering bad weather.
