At 9 30 this morning a pit mouth explosion in the Hilcrest Mine at Crow's Nest Pass killed over three hundred men. A few workers were brought out alive while many bodies were recovered from the pit.
Calgary reports a catastrophic explosion at Hillcrest mine near Crow's Nest Pass. Official counts show 225 men still trapped, 65 extricated but many dead, with rescue trains rushing to the site. Fire and toxic smoke hinder efforts as authorities warn the death toll may rise.

In Wilkie Saskatchewan a charge of murder is laid against Robert Ferguson, after an inquest into the death of William Lachner near Wilkie. Ferguson, an Lachner employee, was jailed in Battleford following May 12 discharge of a shotgun. Preliminary hearing held before T A Ansley with crown witnesses. decision reserved.
James Garfield Gardiner of Lemberg Liberal and William Ernest Read of Lipton Conservative were nominated to contest the North Qu Appelle seat vacated after J A McDonald was unseated for improper practices.
Carbon Alberta June 9 nearly half the town lies in ruins after a morning blaze destroyed six major businesses. Firefighters gained control by 5 pm with damages estimated at 40 000 to 50 000 and insured losses around 13 000. A warehouse blast from 50 000 rounds of ammunition rattled the area during the firefight. The fire started at one o'clock and news reached Cal gary sixty miles away by telephone lines restored at 7 am.
Rosthern Sask June 19 two candidates nominated to fill the legislature vacancy caused by the resignation of Gerhard Ens William B Bashford Liberal and Georg Braden Conservative. Polling will take place a week from today in Rosthern and surrounding area.
Calgary June 19 A heavy crude oil strike was made at the Monarch well near Olds. Driller Dunn believes a heavy flow exists with two deeper zones possibly ahead. The well was struck at 808 feet and the oil shows a dark olive green color.
