At a goodwill meeting in St Andrews Nova Scotia and New England governors clashed over subsidies in fishing. Sandy MacLean said there are no Canadian subsidies for fishermen and noted subsidy levels have been sharply reduced since 1980. Newfoundland premier Brian Peckford criticized a new salt fish import tariff to Puerto Rico.
