Stratford Festival opens with disastrous Misanthrope
The Stratford Festival's 1981 season opens badly with Moliere's The Misanthrope. Critics fault director Jean Gascon and lead Brian Bedford for a weak, artificial production amid financial strain and artistic turmoil. Critics predict a troubled season despite eight planned shows and limited rehearsal time.
