Canada Wins NATO Backing For Human Contacts Push

Canada secured NATO support for a human oriented approach in future East Europe talks. The final communique emphasized improving human contacts ahead of the 34 nation security and cooperation in Europe conference in Helsinki starting July 3. Canadian officials warned real travel easing isn’t imminent but the stance adds pressure to help families divided by the Iron Curtain. External Affairs Minister Mitchell Sharp called the move very satisfying and a top objective for the Helsinki talks. The document also touched on balance of payments issues from military spending and standardization, while omitting references to the Iceland Britain cod war and Greece unrest.
