A lavish ball in Grosvenor Place attended by Princess Mary and many nobles ended when two maids crawled to a skylight and crashed through the glass. One maid died, another was gravely injured, two guests were slightly hurt, and a night watchman broke his leg while investigating.
Harbor Grace Nova Scotia June 16 ten tentative plans for take-off for Europe tomorrow announced by Oliver Leboutillier pilot of the monoplane Columbia with Miss Mabel Bol and Arthur Argles co-pilot. They gave up flying today due to unfavourable weather from ship at sea. Also a day of several days in departure of the monoplane Friendship for Europe appeared probable under unfavorable sea weather. Pilot Wilbur Stultz said no definite hop-off date for Amelia Earhart and Gordon is possible under current conditions.
Sant Ste Marie Ontario June 16 Moose and bears are numerous on the Michipicoten Branch of the Algoma Central Railway train crews must watch for animals to prevent damage to rolling stock Mosquitoes and fires in the bush push the animals into open spaces and they are encountered on many roads in the district in large numbers.
A Winnipeg note from June 16 reports inspections showing Whit total cars at 600 this year, compared with 178 last year.

Kennett Missouri reports the St Francis river levee east of the county seat gave way threatening about a thousand families. In Newport Arkansas the Steven levee near town broke flooding White River Valley with 600000 acres affected and 600 homeless as Red Cross aids victims after 300 workers struggled to save the embankment.
June 16. Messages of congratulations were exchanged between Canada Prime Minister W. L. Mackenzie King and the Premiers of the Australian states at the inauguration of the beam wireless link between Canada and Australia. The premiers voiced hopes the new transmission will deepen mutual understanding and cooperation.
At the national convention in Kansas City Senator Charles Curtis of Kansas was chosen as the running mate for Herbert Hoover. Curtis, a former jockey and U S Senate leader, backed by midwest factions, was seen as a link to farm bloc advocates.
Edmonton rumors say International Utilities Limited led by C. J. Yorath would bid for the city street railway. City commissioners reportedly set to receive an offer, though officials later said none had arrived. The bid would target the street railway separate from a 1,560,000 cash offer for the electric light and power system. A special committee reviews both proposals with power superintendent W. J. Cunningham to prepare a technical report on their merits.
Arrangements are under way at Edmonton offices of the Cana man Manufactures Association for Calgary Lethbridge and Medicine Hat Branches of the CGOMA meetings on June 27 28 and 27 respectively. The Calgary meeting will be a dinner at 6 00 pm in the Calgary Board of Trade rooms. The Lethbridge meeting is at 2 00 pm at the Lethbridge Board of Trade offices. The Medicine Hat dinner meeting will be at 6 00 pm at the Assiniboia Hotel Medicine Hat. Provincial Secretary T Ashenhurst will attend all meetings.
Nanking June 16 The Nationalist Government issued a dedlication of policy declaring China’s unification has been achieved and the new government seeks liberty and freedom for the Chinese people and international peace on equal terms. It pledges to discard militaristic rule and not tolerate Communists, and to negotiate immediate treaties on sovereignty and mutual respect.
A. B. E. Perman, ex custodian, testified in Vancouver court that he stole bonds totaling 15,000 in 1924 and helped Grosart take and hypothecate further bonds. The pair, linked to a $20,000 haul, were arrested May 28 as the trial proceeds.
Aggressive liquidations and bear pressure pushed wheat prices down on the Winnipeg Grain Exchange. Opening declines extended through the session with foreigners absent and prices closing 1.1 2 to 15 8 lower than Fridays final quotes. Shippers and exporters made scattered purchases but could not stem the downturn as Western Canada rains and forecasts of over two million additional acres seeded weighed on sentiment.
At Vadsee Norway on June 16 Major Maddalena, Italian flier, was towed after his Savoia-55 ditched near Var angerfjord. Rescue plans for General Nobile and the Italia crew were delayed as Maddalena’s craft failed to reach Kings Bay.
Kingston Ontario June 16 Richard Willis and Roy Mack were found guilty of extortion and pled guilty on other counts at a trial ending last night. The jury disagreed on the case of Mrs Mary Halliday and she will be tried again later. William Burns testified he was accused of insulting Violet Halliday and signed an agreement to pay 300 under threat of violence. Willis wore a star and claimed to be sheriff.
Winnipeg reports widespread rain yesterday and today boosting crop prospects for 1928. Hail fell near Indian Head but damage minimal. Saskatchewan and nearby areas say crops are thriving with wheat and coarse grains rooting well as unsettled weather continues into the weekend.
