Bassano judge acquits man of statutory rape

A Medicine Hat judge found 23 year old Leslie Russell Payne not guilty of statutory rape and related charges after a two day trial. The judge credited Payne with a reasonable belief the 15 year old complainant was of age and noted inconsistent testimony from the girls involved. The trial covered an April 6 2013 encounter in Bassano with two teenage girls who were allegedly intoxicated and consumed alcohol and shisha at Payne's home.

Redcliff program earns 1500 children’s books via Indigo grant

Redcliff Mennonite Alternative Program received a grant from Indigo Love of Reading Foundation for about 1,500 children’s books valued at $15,000. Books will be shared between the Redcliff Public Library and classrooms to support English language learners and community reading access.
