Composer Lerner Dies at 67 in New York

Alan Jay Lerner composer playwright and lyricist of Brigadoon My Fair Lady and Gigi died today of lung cancer at Sloan Kettering Memorial Cancer Centre in New York. He was 67. He died at 10 15 a.m. hospital spokesmen said.

Ceasefire Declared Around West Beirut Refugee Camps

Khaled Fahum of the Palestinian National Salvation Front says a ceasefire between Amal militia and Palestinian fighters around west Beirut refugee camps will take effect at 6 p.m. local time. The announcement followed a meeting with Amal leader Nabih Berri and Lebanese Druze chief Walid Jumblatt at the Syrian vice-president's offices.

Soviet Union offers major strategic arms cuts for ABM treaty extension

Soviet sources say Moscow proposed cutting strategic warheads to about 6000 on each side and allowing the United States to keep 1650 delivery systems while reducing Moscow to 1250. The plan would permit limited midrange and some long range cruise missiles and hinge on both sides staying within ABM limits for 15 to 20 years until 1987.

Bankers deny plan to pull new $5 bill amid hoarding fears

The Bank of Canada says it will not withdraw the new five dollar note despite rumors that Parliament Buildings carry the American flag.
