Getty warns Alberta will trigger Senate elections if reform stalls

Premier Don Getty said Alberta will use its Senatorial Selection Act to call further Senate elections if reform stalls. The push follows Stan Waters' appointment as Canada's first elected senator and comes amid Meech Lake talks and national studies on an elected, effective, and more equitable Senate with provincial representation.

Wells accuses Mulroney of manipulating Meech Lake talks

Newfoundland Premier Clyde Wells pressed Ottawa to explain reported claims that the Meech Lake accord talks were timed for late hour dealmaking. Commons approves transfer cuts in budget measures

Ottawa MPs vote 133 to 68 to pass Bill C-69 cutting planned federal increases to provinces for health care education and welfare. The plan trims 1990 91 health and postsecondary funding by 869 million and limits welfare transfers to Ontario British Columbia and Alberta to five percent annual increases for two years.
