Food banks see growing demand across Canada
A Canadian Association of Food Banks study shows the number of people using food banks nearly doubled since 1989. In Medicine Hat the figures rose tenfold in six years, with 810 served in 1995 rising to 8,325 in 2001 and an expected 9,228 in early 2002 if trends hold. Local exec director Bill Peterson cites welfare cuts and withdrawn utility rebates as drivers and calls for increased cooperation and efficiency.
