Throughout the day the Germans pressed the center near Somme positions while the French made slow gains on the right. Allied counterattacks created consternation in German ranks as French troops recaptured Morry and stabilized lines south of Belloy and Vanderlcourt, with heavy fighting around Ribecourt and rivers near the Aronde.
German forces push to within seven miles of their start point at Maargegooise while French troops hammer back many assaults. French and allied artillery inflict heavy losses as counter attacks repeatedly retake ground, with Paris and Montdidier-Noyon sectors heavily contested.
Mayor Brown reports a letter from Sullivan Machinery Co Chicago regarding electric mining equipment for J J Swan of Henryetta Oklahoma. Swan urged immediate shipment for winter coal. two machines to be sent by the 18th and one in December with a rushed shipment from another client to meet demand.
June 10 192? report from Ottawa via Elevators News notes German pileups at Zeebrugge submarine base worsen as British naval blockades deepen. Aerial photos show harbor entrance silting, hindering port clearance and aiding British efforts. Inside, a vessel thought to be an enemy destroyer is now seen as a large dredger, whose loss thwarts German channel clearing.
Australian troops under British command attacked north of the Somme near Morlancourt driving the enemy back about 750 yards on raised ground. They captured two German officers and 231 other ranks, along with twenty-one machine guns and a trench mortar. British forces conducted several successful raids along the front.
London June 16 The Order of the British Empire list draws sharp criticism from The Ironing Standard and The Saturday Review as Dominion recipients prompt debate in Canada. The Daily News and The Daily Chronicle weigh in on the dilution of titles and the rush of honors beyond merit.

The School Board unanimously accepted the teachers and Management Committee's recommendation to offer Mr. D. AM Sullivan the principalship of the IG High School. Resignations from FW. McAllister and Miss Grace UL. Griffin were accepted with regret. Miss Lucile McLaren’s resignation was not accepted. A report on teachers’ work and potential new principals was requested, with several candidates named. The panel proposed Sullivan for $2,000 salary and outlined reorganizations for the high school staff.
Chairman Bellamy reports to the School Board on pre examination forecasts from superintendent Tay. He cites war related disorganization and teacher losses. 170 candidates expected 117 pass, 45 doubtful, eight little chance. Promotions hoped at 80 percent in public schools, about 10 percent to summer school training. Irregular attendance and physical defects reduce progress. Board approves opening rooms at Elmstreet and Kitchener for winter and summer school training.
Mack Higdon haus received the contract for repairing the Ansley Spur and extending the line to the mine. Work started this morning as Mayor Brown observed. The contractor will begin repair work promptly to have the spur usable for the exhibition.
The council approved granting the Agricultural Society full concessions in the city during Exhibition week under Police and License oversight. Patriotic societies to receive concessions free of charge, with use of exhibition grounds granted and traffic limits discussed. Aimed to curb gambling and ensure proper policing, with further reports requested on revenue and traffic regulations. General Sir James Willcocks arrived in Toronto with Canadian troops after the Ypres gas attack.
The Central Committee of the cabinet party in Russia urged the United States and allies to dispatch an expeditionary force to Russia to repel German invaders. The appeal, transmitted by the Russian embassy to the State Department, requests that any expedition operate under international control to safeguard Russia’s rights.
The council accepted the License and Police Committee’s recommendation to appoint Mr. CG Sherward to fill the police vacancy. A draft cityCanada Cement Co gas supply agreement was authorized for execution. City Treasurer Baskie’s Calgary trip report spurred calls for departmental coordination and cost savings. Mayor Brown’s Winnipeg trip was summarized and the report adopted.
Toronto June 10 Objection was raised to the nomination of Sir Joseph Flavelle bart for appointment as a delegate to the general conference as Toronto conference begins electing 46 representatives to the Dig assembly meeting in Hamilton next October. Flavelle has long served as a delegate but his re nomination was disputed in conference corridors. His name was placed in nomination and the election will occur later.
