Notley promises full pay for South African firefighters in Alberta
Alberta Premier Rachel Notley said every hour worked by the 300 South African firefighters on the Fort McMurray blaze will be paid under provincial law. The contract with Working on Fire paid roughly 170 dollars a day, about 21.25 per hour for an eight hour shift, plus food lodging and travel. Discrepancies arose as crew members reported 50 dollars per day while agency officials defended the stipend as the Canadian equivalent of 200 to 1,200 dollars monthly, with overtime. The government will investigate and review future contracts to ensure compliance with labour standards.
