Nurses sign new agreement with Alberta health regions
United Nurses of Alberta and Alberta's nine health regions approved a compulsory arbitration panel's recommendations on May 31. The deal includes a 3.5 percent retroactive raise to April 1, 2003, a 3.0 percent retroactive raise to April 1, 2004, and a further 3.0 percent raise on April 1, 2005. With a 98 percent ratification rate, nurses call the settlement a forward step. The contract limits relocations to within 50 kilometers and creates terminal care leave of six months with benefits continuation for ill family members. Provincial health officials anticipate improved scheduling and cross-site hiring, boosting patient care.
