Komanchuk Named Superintendent of Medicine Hat District

John Komanchuk an experienced educator and former St. Louis School principal was appointed Superintendent of Medicine Hat Separate School District No. 21 after a Friday afternoon board meeting. He replaces Lucien Ouelette who resigned April 24 and brings nineteen years of district service.

Battle for hills Israeli force closes in on Syrians

Beef Production Debate as Population Grows

At an AIA meeting two speakers questioned affluent societies right to continue beef production. Alex Johnston of Lethbridge Research Station warned world food output has fallen behind population growth for seven years and there may be a shift to cereals. Thomas Rackham of Alberta's economic division urged considering whether beef should remain a North American luxury or yield to more efficient protein production to aid less advantaged regions.

Russia cuts diplomatic ties with Israel in Moscow note

Tass reported Moscow severed diplomatic relations with Israel after a Soviet note accused Israeli troops of ignoring UN ceasefire orders and advancing toward Damascus. Israel embassy staff were told to leave. the move followed warnings of possible sanctions and joint actions by socialist states to aid Arab countries.

Voice expert backs Nasser on tape authenticity

The London Daily Telegraph reported it submitted an Israeli eavesdropping tape to Prof. Lawrence G. Kersta who after 12 hours said the tape likely features President Nasser. Hat drives $8,000 for Israel war effort locally

A local drive for funds to aid Israel has raised slightly over $8,000. Bert Maltin, chair of the United Jewish Appeal Emergency Fund, said gifts come from Jewish and sympathetic non Jews. No quota. funds go directly to Israel for civilian aid and medical needs, not military use. Two Southern Alberta residents have already gone to Israel to help civilians, not fight. Contributions can be made through local businesses or Hadassah members. The Jewish community in Medicine Hat comprises about 27 families in a population of 78.

Canal Obstructed by Sunken Ships in Suez Canal

BEIRUT. Cairo radio said Israeli air raids sank several ships in the Suez Canal on Friday blocking all navigation. Ahmed Mashour, head of the Suez Canal authority, said raising the sunken ships and clearing the canal to navigation will take some time. Egypt closed the canal after the Middle East war began and ships remain immobilized along the canal’s eastern shore. Mashour did not specify the number or nationality of sunken vessels.
