City council debates carbon levy remarks amid green energy push
Council members clash over mayoral comments on a carbon levy and its impact on Medicine Hat. Officials warn a lack of detail could hinder reforms while stressing continued profits from the electrical utility and the need for provincial cooperation.
Alberta carbon tax plan eyed by critics and industry
Critics lampoon the carbon levy while noting Alberta's lack of provincial sales tax confers an edge. The levy starts Jan 1 as part of a broader climate plan expected to raise about 3 billion for 2017 18. Cenovus Energy says the move could create a North American level playing field and a long term Alberta advantage as an oil producing jurisdiction.

Critics warn the change guts the bill, risking a constitutional clash with the Supreme Court ruling and House of Commons rejection. Supporters say the amendment protects rights while ensuring constitutionality.
