A live squirrel built a nest in a drive up deposit tube at a Hesperia bank over the weekend. When the first customer used the tube Monday the canister pushed the animal inside, it popped out startling teller Maryann Happoldt who fled into the lobby. Humane society captured the critter.
Ethics Commissioner Bob Clark is asked to investigate Deputy Premier Ken Kowalski over the release of private MLA phone numbers. The Alberta Social Credit Party calls the leak a test of the ethics office and urges a full inquiry into Kowalski’s data use, with Premier Klein seeking a remedy.
A study by Jeffrey Reitz and Raymond Breton concludes government multiculturalism and employment equity policies in Canada do not yield different attitudes toward minorities compared with the United States. The authors say stricter U.S. programs show little outcome difference, questioning policy effectiveness. The analysis is in a 156 page book based on cross border polls for the C D Howe Institute.
Ottawa reports former Liberal MP Lloyd Francis urges a routine House motion to declare Lucien Bouchard the Opposition leader and strip him of perks. Francis says Canadians tire of Bouchard's separatist stance and a simple procedural move could shift status despite Bloc holding 54 seats to Reform's 52. Manning prefers by elections to gain Opposition status.
UN envoy Yasushi Akashi announced a one month ceasefire from June 10 to July 10 between Bosnian Serbs and the Muslim led government army including prisoner exchanges. Radovan Karadzic cast the accord as modest while Bosnian Vice President Ejup Ganic warned against longer terms. Akashi noted distrust and room for violation despite the signature handoffs.
In Paris on Wednesday Jacques Chirac said he would not interfere in Quebec's future in Canada while noting his moderation stance. Prime Minister Jean Chretien stressed French interest in Canada and observed Chirac watches Canadian events like a Canadian leader watches French or American affairs.
Medicine Hat Regional Hospital seeks to reopen its three year contract with the Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 189 after a 2 percent salary rollback and reduced holidays. The hospital faces a 3.25 percent further rollback risk as provincial funding cuts total 17 percent over four years.
