Halifax police strike headed for a long disruption
Halifax police officers and City Hall brace for a prolonged dispute as the 196-member Halifax Police Patrolmen's Association presses for higher wages. Negotiators say the city is attempting to break the union after a May 29 strike with demands for a first-class constable salary rising from 20,000 to 27,000 by year two, while the city offer tops at 26,000 after year three. Labor Minister Streatch proposed arbitration, which both sides rejected.
