Pincher Creek Fleeted By Historic Flood Alert In Alberta

Pincher Creek faces a high alert as residents pump basements and disaster services prepare to shelter evacuees. RCMP declare a local state of emergency while the emergency disaster control centre operates from the fire hall. Water levels rise near the hall, rainfall totals approach flood of the century benchmarks, and the Oldman River Dam works to hold back the surge. Families report livestock losses and urgent home evacuations as the storm intensifies.

Flood warnings prompt evacuations in Alberta towns

Alberta issued flood warnings and evacuations after rain swollen rivers surged through southwestern regions. In High River near Calgary a bridge closure and three downtown blocks were evacuated for about 200 residents with a voluntary 3,500 around the golf course. An evacuation centre opened at Highwood High School as sandbagging continued and forecasts warned of more wet weather in western Manitoba.

Auditor general to probe untendered Fort McMurray land sale

Alberta auditor general Fred Dunn will review a 12.2 million untendered sale of 141 hectares in Fort McMurray by the Alberta Social Housing Corporation to the Timberlea Consortium. The Oct 18 2004 agreement, publicized Dec 10 after the election, draws NDP questions that the price was low. Rival bidders say nearby parcels suggest a value of 17.5 to 21 million.
