Trudeau unveils phase three housing plan in Hamilton

The Liberal plan offers a $500 tax free grant for first time buyers of moderately priced new homes. Prime Minister Trudeau unveiled the measure as PC Leader Stanfield criticized it noting the government seems detached. In Ottawa Stanfield said the grant will have little effect while NDP Leader Lewis urged a national prices control board. Caouette finished a western Winnipeg tour urging debates with other leaders.

Meat contracts rejected in Alberta by two plants

Workers at Canada Packers Ltd and Swift Canadian Co in Lethbridge rejected a two year 1.20 hourly wage rise with fringe benefits, delaying a quick settlement. The 2,500 locked out workers, part of a broader plant shutdown, may prompt national action if unresolved by June 15. Slaughter cattle prices rose as supplies dwindled.

Alberta Energy Board weighs long term petrochemical plans

Alberta energy officials heard proposals from Union Carbide Canada Ltd and Cominco Ltd to build petrochemical plants in Alberta. Union Carbide seeks 400 million pounds of ethylene for derivatives and one billion pounds for export. Cominco plans a $112 million fertilizer complex producing ammonia or urea and requiring 18.5 billion cubic feet of gas annually.

Final exchange ends as Lebanon frees Israeli pilots

TEL AVIV AP The last Israeli prisoners held by an Arab state were freed today when Lebanon released two Israeli pilots downed over Lebanon two months ago, the high command said. This is an end of a chapter in our history, said Israeli Chief of Staff Mordechai Gur as the pilots crossed the border. Israel also returned 12 Lebanese prisoners and completed a prisoner exchange deal with Syria under the disengagement agreement.

Peace talks reopen after suspension in Vietnam

Viet Cong and South Vietnamese government resume ceasefire negotiations next week after a dispute over diplomatic privileges led to a breakup last month. Col Vo Dong Giang says the Viet Cong will rejoin talks proposed by Brig Gen Phan Hoa Hiep. Tuesday.

Quebec Language Poll Shows Shifting Official Status Views

A Montreal poll by The Gazette Le Devoir and Le Soleil finds 15.5 percent favor making French the sole official language, 42 percent support both languages, and 40.5 percent want French with English as a second language. It notes 54.5 percent see English knowledge as necessary, and 65.5 percent favor bilingual communications in private firms. The survey involved 1,259 respondents of 1,500 polled, with 84 percent response rate, conducted by the Quebec Institute of Public Opinion May 29 to 31.
