Youth group thief given suspended sentence in Alberta

Trudy Anne Ouimet 34 of the Innisfail area pleaded guilty to theft of more than 5000 dollars. The Crown says she stole just over 18 000 dollars between September 2003 and June 2004 while treasurer of a Red Deer junior forest wardens club. Justice Thomas Schollie called the crime serious as the funds supported youths and the club later folded.

Liberals and NDP push floor crossing amendment

In Ottawa the Liberals and NDP back a Federal Accountability Act amendment to require byelections if a majority in an MP's riding petitions within 60 days after a party switch. The plan targets cabinet minister David Emerson who crossed from the Liberals to the Conservatives, but it is not retroactive. Stephen Owen says the measure lets voters and the switching MP express themselves.
