CFB Suffield Vast Base Size Surpasses Much of Luxembourg
A historical note describes CFB Suffield as a sprawling outpost with a small administrative core and a vast training area. It covers 2,690 square kilometers, about two thirds the size of Prince Edward Island, and could envelop most of Canada’s other major military training zones. It also notes past cattle ranching and immigration era homesteads amid harsh climate and sparse rainfall.

Suffield Prairie History Shapes Canadian Military Range
CAPT. ALEX VAN ROOYEN recalls the Suffield area once used by 125 farms and 452 people. By 1941 the land was to become an experimental range, settlers bought out and moved. Postwar DRB work led to CFB Suffield in 1971, with Britain’s training program lasting to 2006 under Canada’s lease and local civilian use.
