Derailment in France Kills Nine on Express Train

A Paris to Nantes express carrying about 2000 passengers derailed near Brittany during Whitsuntide holidays. Nine people died and many were injured as the engineer failed to observe signals, reversed too late, and ran through four slow signals at high speed before the crash. He was arrested.

A Oklahoma college co-ed helped thwart escape by Frank Sawyer during a gun battle in Caddo county. Sawyer had kidnapped Bob Goodfellow and Lois Goodfellow and used the clerk as a shield. Lois Goodfellow choked Sawyer as officers closed in, allowing arrests.

Yorkton June 4 Gus Stebner 45 year old farmer died from a hammer blow to the head as he sat on his farm home steps. Henry Lopes 33 a farm hand is held for questioning after the assault. Stebner was cradling his infant child when attacked.

Stubbs Accepts CCF Invite To Sask Convention

Winnipeg date June 5 Canadian Press Lewis St George Stubbs former Winnipeg county court judge accepted invitation from Wadena Saskatchewan Farmer Labour group to attend Co operative Commonwealth Federation convention at Preeceville Saskatchewan where a CCF candidate will be chosen to contest the Mackengie federal by election. Stubbs said the vast jury opposed the commission findings and that the law was used to kill him as a judge. He contrasted pension option with dismissal saying he would not betray his honor.

Ottawa Religious Crank Disrupts Mass At St Josephs

Ottawa resident Wishart known street preacher disrupted St Josephs Roman Catholic church during Mass brandishing an iron pipe and smashing a life sized statue of St Joseph beside the altar. About 1000 worshippers including many children caused panic when one child fainted and was removed. Wishart was seized by a church official and held for police on a tentative property damage charge. He has a history of disturbances in Ottawa streets and has been arrested previously for noisy preaching outside the church.

Alberta Man Held in San Jose Murder Case

Alberta man David Lamson is held in the San Jose murder case as his mother notes a prior Alberta boyhood shooting may have been accidental. Lamson, age years, was jailed on a charge of murdering his wife while authorities sought Canadian explanations from Red Deer. Edmonton dispatch says Lamson was exonerated in a separate shooting incident with the death.
