The 1919 flight by Captain Alcock and Lieutenant Brown began at St John s Newfoundland and landed near Clifden Ireland after 15 hours 57 minutes. They flew a Vickers Vimy Rolls Royce twin engine under bad conditions winning 10000 prize money. Both pilots were knighted later that year. Alcock died in a crash about a year later. The LO D E to mark the tenth anniversary on June 14.
A Yokohama message reports the Japanese steamer Ugo Maru a total loss from fire with 700 Russian fishermen aboard and 43 Japanese crew. The blaze began May 28 after sailing from Vladivostok May 23 toward Kamchatka fishing banks.
At 2:30 p.m. the river near the bridge reached about nineteen feet six inches, rising thirteen feet since Monday. Industrial Avenue is flooded with water up to five feet deep, blocking traffic as the creek spreads northward. Strathcona Island is nearly submerged with the river on both sides, and Balmoral Street electrical substation shows six feet of water. Prince Henry Duke of Gloucester received a fractured collar bone when his horse slipped at a polo match in Vancouver. Doctors report the fracture in good alignment and say the royal patient rested well through the night. Further itinerary changes depend on his condition.
The Eagle Butte well has reached 3490 feet and is believed to be in the final Dakota formation. It should enter the Kootenays within the next few feet, as drilling progresses toward deeper strata.
Mrs. Sarah Powers, 71, rooming house keeper, and Earl Manchester, 21, from Canada, indicted for the slaying of J. W. Parks. State charges Powers sought Park's life insurance and was paid for the act.
Rev Paul Midivents found dead with a revolver in hand after shooting Helen Olyla 25 who lay seriously injured from two bullet wounds in the head. The clergyman had become demented six months earlier and left his pastorate to recover his health.
T Luff a Banff visitor from Alta notes Scotland and Glasgow pride in Canada's trans Atlantic shipping role. He says ship construction directly employs thousands on the Clyde and boosts Scottish industries through materials and fittings. He cites Canadian Pacific orders aiding Scots shipbuilders and notes Luff’s wartime ties to ship management and Lord Maclay. He departs Ranft for the East.
Trigo the Sandford colt out of Athasi won the 149th Derby at Epsom, beating Walter Gay by one and a half lengths with Brientz third. Walter Gay owned by Lord Woolavington and Brienz by Somerville Tattersall. crowd estimated at half a million.
In Ottawa on June 5, Conservative members and Senators honored Hon. R. B. Bennett with a dinner praising his leadership. Loyal expressions and appreciation were voiced. The Dominion government has collected 742,128,162 in income and business profits taxes since 1916 through the last fiscal year.
Mr Wm P Mapes superintendent of Government Fish Hatcheries Fort Qu Appelle arrived with a million pickerel fry for Elkwater Lake. He was assisted by A P Burns H Niles and others to transport stock and will conduct netting experiments to assess the deposits progress. The Lake was briefly open for pike fishing July 1 to November on dispensation after talks with authorities. The note urges support for the association and membership.
London confirms Right Hon. Ramsay MacDonald accepted the King’s invitation to form a new Labour government cabinet replacing Stanley Baldwin. The tally shows Labour leading with 288 seats, Conservatives 258, Liberals 58, Nationalists 3, Prohibition 1, Independents 3. Oxford University elected two Conservatives to the Commons, Lord Hugh Cecil and Sir Charles Oman retaining seats while Liberal candidate Gilbert Murray lost.

Ottawa June 5 Gan Press reports a sub committee of the parliamentary committee on agriculture reached a unanimous decision on grain marketing regulation. The report, completed at 1 pm, will go to the general committee. Key provisions include amendments to the Canadian Grain Act banning mixing wheat in top four grades and a fixed out turn standard for wheat at terminals based on 75 percent grade average plus 25 percent of the minimum for the grade. The Board of Grain Commissioners remains with current assistants. regional bodies to handle complaints. shipment arrangements endorsed in line with Brown commission findings.
