Crews fought to contain a massive fire in northwest Ontario as shifting winds added 10,000 hectares to the blaze. About 400 workers battled the line near the Manitoba border, with the fire now over 49,000 hectares since its May 21 start, the largest in six years per ministry spokesman Gerry O'Reilly.
Shauna Petrie of Nepean, a paraplegic after her first skydiving jump in June 1981 near Winchester, Ottawa area, receives over $1.2 million from The Ottawa Diving Centre insurers. The five hours of instruction preceded the accident, and the award is the largest of its kind in Canada. Petrie, 21, will get lifelong monthly payments starting July to cover injuries and expenses.
Halifax reports fear of U S retaliation as Ottawa enacts tariff measures on imported goods including Christmas trees. Canadian Tree Growers president Lloyd MacKinnon warns higher prices and lost profits, while publishers and distributors fear consumer price hikes and harm to retail sales amid U S use of a broader duties dispute.
The banned Solidarity union reports its Warsaw chapter suffered heavy losses after the arrest of city leader Zbigniew Bujak and other activists. Government says underground ties to Western centers and US knowledge of Bujak’s hideout were established. Bujak captured May 31 after over four years on the run.
Three strikers suffered broken legs when a utility pole used to block Red Deer access to Fletcher's Fine Foods plant was knocked into them by a bus carrying non union workers. The pole spun and injured pursuing pickets while two on the bus hood escaped unharmed as about 100 strikers remained at the scene.
Police clash with non union workers and pickets at the Gainers and Fletcher plants. In Edmonton 138 officers escorted buses through lines to the Gainers plant and six arrests were made while Red Deer saw arrests and plant access blocked as management halted operations. Union leader John Ventura vowed a 24 hour vigil and said workers would keep up pressure for wage gains totaling 1.03 per hour over two years.
Alberta Energy Resources Conservation Board chair Vern Millard told the Commons energy committee that crude output could fall as much as 10 percent by 1990 if prices do not recover, with losses up to 140 000 barrels per day from a 1.4 million bpd base. By 1995 declines could reach 130 000 to 160 000 bpd. Millard cited prices near 20 dollars US for 1990 and 28.50 for 1995, and described supplementary sales to market unused pipeline space to prevent shut-ins.
