Canada plans $3.5 million July 1 celebration

State Secretary John Roberts announced a coast to coast Canada Day program with a $3.5 million budget, aiming to revive centennial spirit since 1967. The plan includes a CBC televised three hour special, a Parliament Hill fireworks show, regional parades, and a 1 000 community coordination effort with the Council of Canadian Unity.

Gulf and Mobil curtail Mackenzie Delta projects

Gulf Oil Canada Ltd and Mobil Oil Canada Ltd say Mackenzie Delta natural gas exploration on their Pars ons Lake leases will be curtailed until the federal government clarifies land regulations and approves a northern pipeline. The partners have invested over 125 million in the delta with Gulf as operator holding 75 percent.

Mustard plant proposed for Warner area by international partners

Demeter Agro Ltd of Lethbridge Universal Foods of Edmonton B Heller and Co of Illinois and Sakai Spice Manufacturers Co Ltd of Japan plan a mustard seed plant to supply Edmonton Illinois and Japan. John McDowell says project would expand the local mustard facility with equal partners meeting later this month. Details not released. Gulf Mobil gas project in Delta faces pipeline and land regulation hurdles with a 400 million dollar processing plant contemplated amid a Moratorium on frontier development and a 10 year pipeline moratorium recommended by Mr Justice Thomas Berger.

Political hijack ends with talks aboard train in Netherlands

Two South Moluccan elders boarded a hijacked train in the northern Netherlands to negotiate the release of about 60 hostages held at two locations. The AP reports the militants sought concessions from Dutch authorities as negotiations began.

Village to be sold to non profit for seniors

Lougheed In Talks With Soviet Officials On Policy

Alberta Premier Peter Lougheed met with Leonid Yefremov in Moscow to discuss cooperation in oil, gas, and agriculture with the Soviet Union. The one hour session followed a prior Alberta trade delegation visit and included a note on potential cattle supplies. Lougheed toured the Kremlin, attended a Canadian ambassador lunch, and heads to Minsk on Saturday.
