Atomic test in Nevada tops Hiroshima blast record
In Las Vegas tests, the largest US detonated device to date created a 50 kiloton fireball and two minute-plus cloud over Yucca Flat. The 4 15 a.m. PDT detonation from 40 000 feet produced a 40 000 foot high cloud visible from San Francisco and Los Angeles. Police say heavy washouts forced the crossing to be by boat, the engine failed, the craft drifted downstream and crashed into a bridge.
