A Sri Lankan High Court judge found former Australian javelin champion Reginald Spiers, 44, guilty on four heroin possession counts and one hashish count. Arrested at Colombo airport in December 1984, Spiers faces a death sentence though such penalties are rarely carried out and he may serve life instead.

War crimes arrest in Austria tied to 1943 Mauthausen death camp

Vienna AP reports Martin Bartesch, a Chicago janitor, arrested near Weyregg in Upper Austria after U.S. officials charged him as a former SS death camp guard. He is jailed in Wels and may face expulsion. Neal Sher cites Bartesch on a log of prisoner killings linked to Mauthausen. He is alleged to have killed a French Jew in 1943.

Harold Myers 60 pleaded guilty to impaired driving causing bodily harm and failing to remain at the scene of an accident from 1986 in which a 25 year old woman was injured. A judge delayed sentencing until October so Myers can watch the Toronto Blue Jays if they reach the World Series. The Ontario attorney general ordered a transcript of the hearing.
