Four Reach Surface as Thetis Submarine Rescue Continues

Frantic efforts to save 90 men trapped in the sunken British submarine Thetis near Great Ormes Head continue after four crewmen reached the surface using the Davis diving suit. Admiralty warns hope of saving those aboard is diminishing as air supplies run low and salvage attempts face strong tides.

Thetis Submarine Located After Irish Sea Sinking

Birkenhead England June 2 The Thetis submarine which sank with at least 78 aboard during tests in the Irish sea has been located. Salvage vessels Salvor and Vigilant began operations after marker buoy signals. The wreck lies in about 180 feet of water seven miles off the Mersey bar, about 25 miles from the coast.

Royal visit may stop at Portage la Prairie

The Winnipeg Free Press reports unofficially that King George VI and Queen Elizabeth may attend a divine service in Portage la Prairie on Sunday and then visit Deer Lodge Military Hospital in Winnipeg. The royal train would proceed to Winnipeg. public access to Portage service would be restricted. Mayor Queen and Premier Bracken had discussed a hospital stop to please veterans disappointed by prior itineraries.

Basic Minimum Wheat Price Discussed by World Committee

June 2 in London the World Wheat Advisory Committee discussed a basic minimum world price of 80 cents a bushel for No 3 Northern wheat. Trade Minister Euler announced the Canadian delegation backed the proposal while others found it too high or too low. Delegates adjourned to consult governments on export quotas and plan to meet again on July 7.

Swimming Pools Open For The Season

New Air Route From West Australia To East Africa

The flying boat Cuba prepares to fly a 5 000 mile Indian Ocean route from Western Australia to East Africa starting Saturday. Sponsored by Captain Percy Taylor of Sydney it offers an alternative for the England Australia air mail during wartime. Taylor served as navigator to Sir Charles Kingsford Smith on the Southern Cross missions and as second pilot on the Lady Southern Crags flight.

Palestine disorders flare with casualties near Jerusalem

Thirteen killed and scores wounded in fresh Palestine unrest. A patrol of four British soldiers and three Jews was ambushed northwest of Jerusalem by an Arab band. Six Arabs died and many were injured when time bombs exploded in the market near Jaffa Gate.
