Ottawa announces a bill amending the Combines Investigation Act to transfer administration to an independent federal trade and industry commission. The definition of combine and merger will be broadened to curb monopolies, trusts, and anti competitive practices, with the commission answerable only to the prime minister.
A committee meeting in Calgary to select a mathematics textbook for schools in the four western provinces includes representatives from Alberta, British Columbia, and Manitoba educational departments. Calgary June 1 William Aberhart Alberta Social Credit leader indicated the party may contest federal elections within six to eight weeks aiming to elect a solid Western bloc. He urged discussion and unity among groups and warned of possible preparations for a federal contest. Edmonton May 31 Major C H Douglas founder of the Douglas system said he would leave for England after three weeks in the province, with payments totaling 4500 for his two year retainer and 1200 last year exempt from tax. He planned to confer with Premier Reid before sailing. Reid said discussions with cabinet were not complete.
In the House of Commons George Coote of Macleod argues Canada's auto industry is becoming too costly to sustain. He cites high tariffs and price gaps with U.S. models, noting a farmer paying 1480 for a car versus 974 across the border.
