Western Farmers Pay Too High Duty

Ottawa May 18 Mr Thomas Mac Xutt of Saltcoats urged in the House that western farmers pay excessive duty on U S machinery parts. He cited a farmer paying 30 per cent while 274 per cent was the maximum argued. Trade, repairs and retail valuation were raised as concerns. The debate touched salaries and civil service appointments, including Crossley Sherwood, with defenses of merit and law. J D McArthur Raises Money in May for Western Railway

J D McArthur, noted Western Canada railway builder, secured about 2.42 million dollars in May for the Edmonton Danvegan and British Columbia railway. Funds came from Pro Wagon Savings Bank and Trust Co Cincinnati and Breed Elliott Harrison Chicago. The bonds are 30 year 415 percent guaranteed by Alberta government.

Irvine School Marks Empire Day And Red Cross Day

On May 23 Irvine public school celebrated Empire Day with patriotic exercises and songs. Teachers and students also observed Red Cross Day inviting class fundraising via neat Red Cross boxes. The local Red Cross chairman visited, thanked the children, and spoke about the society’s ongoing work.

Departmental Examinations Set Across Alberta Centers

Prohibition Act of Alberta Goes to Referendum

Victoria B C May 25 By the government prohibition bill the sale of liquor issea beverages absolutely prohibited. Liquor may only be sold for export. A commission may decide compensation to hotel men and liquor interests if prohibition passes. If adopted a referendum will ask voters to choose prohibition with compensation to be decided by government.

Sharland earns Military Cross for brave act during siege

Local brevities recount William Sharland son of a freight foreman who won the Military Cross for grabbing a German bomb and hurling it from a trench saving comrades.
