President Eisenhower approves a plan to build and launch the world’s first man made satellites. They would be basketball sized instruments to collect scientific data and orbit earth about 200 to 300 miles up at 18000 mph.

Fire likely started in a kitchen stove gutted the three room frame house and contents of John Eresman six miles north of Tilley early Wednesday evening. Loss estimated at 6000 dollars with 2000 coverage on the house and 1500 on contents. Eresman worked at Alberta Clay Products until a year ago then bought a near field irrigation farm near the old British Block 55 miles west of Medicine Hat. Neighbors found the fire around 7 pm and helped fight the barn while the house burned. Eresman planned to rebuild soon.
Police service dog Wolf, a 75 pound German Shepherd, retires in September after 11 years with the RCMP. He served in Nelson and other posts, aided in tracking criminals and locating missing persons, and played a role in a notable dog evidence case in New Brunswick. His handler, Cpl. S. A. Rammage, will keep Wolf at home for his final days.
CALGARY The conservation board granted New British Dominion Oil and Gas Co. permission to build a 50 mile 10 inch gas pipeline from Etzikom supply field to Medicine Hat. The line will serve a $25,000,000 chemical fertilizer plant and supply the municipality. Construction to start this fall with an estimated cost of $1,500,000.
An area of cloud and rain is moving eastward through Alberta today and is expected to reach western Saskatchewan by tonight. Skies will be generally cloudy with the occasional sunny period Saturday.
Milwaukee AP report on Rev. George Crist 31 of Durham Wisconsin found guilty on nine counts of deviation from church doctrine in the first heresy trial in sixty years of the United Lutheran Church northwest synod. He was suspended from the pulpit while nine counts were upheld and five charges were found not guilty. The trial lasted about three hours and the synod leader Dr Paul Bishop awaited final action.
The Medicine Hat Health Unit reports a spike in tuberculosis with several new cases in city and district. At a Brooks health board meeting, Dr. J. M. Brown was authorized to contact the health department about a mobile X-ray survey and clinic coordination.

Mike Slemko 49, assistant road master for Canadian Pacific Railway, died after his gasoline speeder was struck by a car at a Portreeve Sask crossing. Calgary driver Norman A. McLeod faces police inquiry. Slemko pronounced dead on scene from head injuries. He worked out of Medicine Hat and recently began east end patrols of the Empress line. survived by a wife and a local funeral home says remains are at Harris Funeral Home in Prelate.
