Final Settlement Obstacle in BC Lumber Strike Persists

Vancouver CP reports the final settlement on the British Columbia lumber strike stalled as the union rejected operators' demand to call off pickets and have 32 000 workers on immediate call. The union insists on a signed new contract before ending the 45 day strike. Both sides agreed to mediator terms but set resume conditions. Union president Stewart Alsbury warned the strike remains on until ink dries on the contract. The strike began June 15 with a promised 35 cent pay increase, later adjusted to 12.5 cents.
