Ottawa prepares a 13.3 percent rise in alcohol excise and 15.8 percent in tobacco excise despite six-and-five limits. Officials warn the hikes could cost revenue if limited to five percent. Alcohol and tobacco together now bring in about $2 billion for the federal treasury.
The U S Senate backed deploying 27 MX missiles in underground silos in Wyoming and Nebraska as part of a 200 billion Pentagon budget. A 58 to 41 vote rejected an effort to cancel 2.5 billion for MX. House approval followed, with a conference to resolve differences. First missiles begin 1986 to 1989.
