The Shamrock IV led Resolute at Sandy Hook as they started the 30 mile windward course. Both failed to cross the line within the two minute handicap. By 5 p.m. Resolute had moved ahead, with Shamrock closing the gap as the race continued toward the finish.
A Polish supply train of 13 cars carrying arms and ammunition from France, with five Polish and one French officer aboard, was halted by German police and civilians at Marburg, sixty miles from Coblenz. The German crowd stripped the cars of war matériel and the crews refused to move the train further.
Berlin reports the cabinet approved a bill to disarm the civilian population and to introduce it to the Reichstag immediately. The army bill also ends universal compulsory military service. French authorities reportedly refused travel permits to socialist Reichstag member George Ledebourg for a July 31 Paris address.
A sharp 12 02 a m quake rattled downtown windows and awoke county jail prisoners who cried for release. Reports from across the city indicate no damage despite the tremor.
Winnipeg July 27 Canadian Press reports from Canadian National Railway focal offices show week ended July 24 indicating splendid crop prospects across Alberta with prospects of record crops. Many districts report excellent to bumper conditions with wheat heading out rapidly and ample moisture though Hanna area notes damage from dry weather despite last week’s rains. Saskatchewan reports unknown this morning. government notes fair prospects. Manitoba ranges from very poor to best of shape.
Premier Millerand with Marshal Foch and ministers departs Paris to meet Lloyd George at Boulogne. They discuss a Russian Soviet proposal for a conference with Allied representatives and Russia’s Soviet government with Millerand linking negotiations to Soviet认可 of prior treaties and Russian public authority.
Messrs. F. S. Ratliff A. Belcher W. S. Iverson and T. A. Hassard traveled about 150 miles Sunday through the Box Springs and Happy Hollow Valley districts. Ratliff reports Valley crops expected at 20 to 30 bushels per acre and Box Springs around 20 bushels.
London reports Evan Davies the labor candidate was returned unopposed in the Ebb-Vale election as rival Tom Richards resigned. Davies secures victory without opposition in the July 27 edition.
At last night’s city council meeting Ald Huckvale and Ald Burns moved to accept a private sale bid for 50 000 in city bonds. Mayor Brown noted market difficulties for western municipal bonds and that bids were discouraged by financial leaders. The city solicitor reviewed a claim by Gottlieb Lentz over Hill road damage and suggested no city liability. The letter was to be replied with a copy of the solicitor’s opinion and efforts to fix Hill road. Tax assessment was referred to the department for Lentz’s damaged lot.
London authorities confirmed Archbishop Mannix of Melbourne would not be allowed to land in the British Isles following his recent utterances. The decision clarifies the earlier in house of commons remark by Premier Lloyd George.
A Grand Trunk Pacific line wreck near Magnolia Bridge 6:15 this morning kills fireman J Clements and injures engineer W F Baker and conductor C Conrad. The derailed train from Edmonton carried grain cars eight of ten ditched as washouts caused the wreck. Victims reside in West Edmonton and responders rush to scene.
Greek troops completed the capture of Adrianople after five days of operations against Jafar Tavaryx's main force. Turkish forces fled in panic, abandoning arms and supplies as Greek armies converged in Thrace and along the Maria and Rodosto routes. The Turkish commander fled by automobile to Kirk Kilishe.
German foreign secretary Walter Simons rebuked claims that Germany might ally with the Soviet Union to dodge obligations. He spoke to the Reichstag yesterday denying any temptation to join Moscow in any alliance.
Samuel Gompers reports labor’s national nonpartisan group led in 15 primary contests. He says labor helped defeat hostile candidates in many districts while denying labor partisanship and stressing candidate labor records and platforms for union guidance.
Fernie July 27 Pathfinder PB Gomery on a cross country auto road survey from Montreal to Vancouver arrived in Fernie and reports a very satisfactory trip. He and Mrs Gomery commend the Crow's Nest Pass route as the best road they have traveled on their journey through Canada.
R B Crummy of Condor becomes principal of the Public School as Locke returns to Red Deer to take the role of high school principal.
Medicine Hat will be well represented at the 14th annual Western Canada Irrigation Association convention in Lethbridge starting tomorrow. Delegates from Medicine Hat include Alderman Huckvale Col Spencer and several others. they plan to travel by automobile around 9 am. Secretary Richardson of the board of trade is coordinating additional attendees.
Warm weather ripened nearby fields and cutting starts today on J H Parsons hundred acres three and a half miles downriver. T G Allan with fifty acres on A G Denbigh's farm three miles upriver plans to begin tomorrow, with Trenty Cavan's farm north of Dunmore also set to start.
