Senator Edward M. Kennedy of Massachusetts pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of a fatal accident and received a two month suspended jail term. Defence lawyers cited legal defenses but Kennedy chose to plead guilty and accept punishment. He told reporters he would seek TV time to explain to Massachussetts residents, with a national address planned at 7:30 p.m. EDT.

FBI agents from New York state conducted a door to door search in Niagara on the Lake Ontario area for a suspected kidnapper in the case of Patricia Ann Martin a 23 month old Buffalo girl found wandering. The mother Mrs Murray Martin was reunited with her child at the police station as investigators from Buffalo and Ontario joined local police in the inquiry. The child was found in Canada and a federal kidnapping alert had been issued. Authorities described the suspect as a heavy set blonde woman in a yellow Volkswagen with a black top and noted a car with Ontario plates seen near Dunnville. Several agents from Port Colborne checked a telephone tip as part of the wide effort.
Ottawa reports show a rules filibuster ending at 1 58 a m after Trudeau offered the electorate a say on who bears the blame. He defended reforms as keeping Parliament relevant while opposition leaders called the measures autocratic and warned of democracy’s dagger.

Mariner VII to begin Aug 3. officials credit improved spacecraft, ground receivers, and transmitter power for higher quality images than four years ago.
A 15 minute hail storm near Grande Prairie damaged crops and broke windows. Hail up to % inch shattered shingles and knocked cattle to their knees at Valhalla and La Glace. Beaver Lodge fescue crops damaged. rain totals reached half an inch at Grande Prairie and 14% inches at Woking. winds peaked at 50 mph as the storm moved northeast toward Peace River.
