London reports Austen Chamberlain says no cabinet consultation yet and no prospect of legislation this session to lift the Canadian cattle embargo. Edmonton and Ottawa react with cautious optimism as MPs approve the move, but passage remains uncertain with further hurdles.
Beneficial showers fell from Hatton to Swift Current with three hours of rain overnight. A light rainfall reached parts of the district toward the Saskatchewan boundary, and the city recorded about one tenth of an inch.
Word from Lethbridge after noon Monday reports the Louis Oil Co. well three miles northeast of Gordon Campbell discovery near Kevin has been drilled in with a good oil flow. It is closer to the Sunburst end of the arch and heavier flowing than the Kevin well, nearing Sunburst No. 1 production. This adds a fourth producer in the field. Homestake drilling was expected to reach cap-rock as crew set casing, with the well about 150 yards south and west of Sunburst No. 1.
Caledonian Society prepares for a large athletic event at the Exhibition grounds starting at 1 am with 40 yard dash heats for youths and 100 yard sprints for teens, followed by afternoon events, dancing and football. Transportation by bus from Chamber of Commerce begins at 9 am, with lunches provided, and officials including judges and referees named for track and field competitions.
In New York July 25 the Wall Street Journal notes US buyers are sourcing British coal at lower prices than domestic. West Virginia coal is cited as having boosted market quotes with delivered NY prices around 10.50 to 11 dollars per ton, while British coal tops out around 8.40 dollars per ton for first and second quality Admiralty sorts.
Ottawa July 25 The Canadian Forestry association reports that forest fires this year have caused losses of timber greater than enough to build 100,000 homes. Robson Black, the association's manager, said the season's devastation exceeds the disaster to parliament buildings.
Truro Nova Scotia July 25 Felix Cook an Assyrian shot and killed R R Bentley a leading practitioner and public health officer yesterday and then shot himself in the head dying last evening in a tragedy tied to personal safety concerns.
Washington reports the U S government will activate its emergency coal control program within 48 hours. Secretary Woaver says ratification of the plan for distribution and restriction of unfair prices by operators is expected soon, with local committees to be appointed if districts withhold cooperation.
Dublin reports intense fighting near Kilma lock County Limerick as National Army troops push forward against Republican irregulars. Small guerrilla bands disrupt field lines while Free State forces seize large western areas, with Claremorris freed and irregulars retreating toward Ballinrobe. Ha Mont de Valera reportedly traveled to Cassell. irregulars burned Cassel and Tipperary barracks.
Winnipeg reports that Manitoba crops have held steady and improved in many districts during the past eleven days, despite weather variation. Saskatchewan faces deterioration in large areas due to scant rain, complicating mid July forecasts as the Free Press notes varying conditions across the prairies.
Several subscriptions to Community Oil Wells Ltd are in arrears while the company proceeds with rapid drilling. Subscribers must pay the remaining amounts immediately to secretary C. R. Garval or to the Dominion Bank.
Edmonton July 25 The second session of Alberta’s Fifth Legislature opened at 2 30 pm with Lt Gov Brett presiding. The throne speech urged swift Wheat Board legislation and noted Governor General Byng’s September visit. New members A G Andrews W J Farquharson and A M Chornohus joined Speaker, filling seats after Stewart’s elevation and Wright’s death. The wheat bill adds a clause allowing government guarantee of bank loans if deemed advisable.
Due to unrest in Ireland affecting flax, three Armagh manufacturers Messia Joseph Marshall David McClellan and R R Louden arrived in Canada aboard the Metagama to study duplicating Ireland’s flax industry in the Dominion.
