Prime Minister Trudeau told four western premiers that Canada must diversify the western economy and limit dependence on single commodities. He called for wider western decision making and greater concern for individuals, urging a fair deal with broader career choices and lifestyle options across both large cities and smaller communities.
John D. Ehrlichman testified before the Senate Watergate committee that Dean lied and that White House staff relied on him for information. Ehrlichman said Dean gave incomplete and selective data despite 22 meetings, eight on non Watergate topics, and defended the Nixon administration while accusing Dean of fear driven repetition.

A Medicine Hat man was rushed to hospital after a natural gas explosion in an oven at European Imports bakery on Woodman Avenue and Elm Street. The blast at about 10 45 a.m. tore a rear wall hole, badly damaging the oven area. firefighters found a flame in the gas line and police had not yet determined the cause.
The Senate Watergate committee and special prosecutor Cox issue subpoenas for President Nixon’s Watergate tapes. Nixon refuses access citing separation of powers. The dispute moves toward court battles or a test in public opinion as the president pledges to address the issue later. Wright counters Cox’s claim, noting prosecutors are effectively under the presidency.
