Hope fades for trapped coal miners near Blacksville
Rescue workers drilled a five inch bore into the burning Blacksville No. 1 mine as nine miners remained trapped since Saturday night. Officials said chances of finding them alive were quite dim and temperatures near the fire reached perhaps 2500 to 3000 degrees. Sixty three workers were in the four mile mine with 31 reaching safety after the blaze started when a heavy machine struck a live electrical wire.
