Enthusiastic crowds filled downtown Medicine Hat to witness the largest parade in the city’s history as about 160 floats and 280 entries moved along the Stampede parade route despite threatening clouds. Last year there were 262 entries.
The CP Rail float with a steam engine and telegraph table captured the $100 first prize in the commercial float class at the Stampede. Edmonton Northlands took second with the Klondike Days tribute, Medicine Hat's Continental Inn third, while Lethbridge led the community float winners.

The Alsands synthetic oil project will receive another 22 million from the nine member consortium to complete engineering work at Fort McMurray. No new site work will occur as the dispute between Alberta and Ottawa lingers. If a timely energy pricing deal is not reached, the project could be suspended, with reactivation taking up to two years.
Energy Minister Marc Lalonde says the next round of price talks with Alberta’s Merv Leitch will determine if an agreement is possible by fall.
