Lacombe will gain city status on September 5 after provincial cabinet approval. Mayor Judy Gordon says the move offers a new perspective and future prospects. The 2008 census counted 11,733 residents, following public hearings and a survey showing 92 percent support.
Premier Ed Stelmach announced a 520 million dollar grant for a new regional hospital in northern Alberta. The facility will include two cancer radiation units to shorten travel to Edmonton or Calgary and improve wait times with construction starting next spring. Some services may operate by fall 2014.
