Medicine Hat council approved the lot size mix for Southlands Residential Phase 4 set to enter the market in 2006. The plan includes 188 single family lots with 51 small, 82 average, 55 large, plus 20 R-2 duplex, 5 R-3 fourplex, 3 large R-3, and one neighbourhood commercial lot. The large A-3 lot beside South Boundary Road was designated an affordable housing site. pricing and marketing will return to council in 2006.
Mayor Don Weisbeck appointed Councillors Martin Shields and Clayton Johnson to a taxi bylaw ad hoc committee. They must deliver an option paper by November detailing potential bylaw elements from cab numbers to license counts and driver checks.
Canadian Press reports escalating violence in Hobbema as two young men in black fired 12 shots from a high calibre shotgun at a parked truck, then shots pierced a Samson reserve house window. No injuries. A two week crime wave includes assault, home invasion and seizures of machetes guns and bats. Police expect further activity as crowds gather for a rival event.
A 21 year old Billy Jack Bird pleaded guilty to second degree murder in the beating death of 71 year old Selina Nellie McIntosh and aggravated assault on 74 year old George Alexander McIntosh. Justice Ellen Gunn accepted a joint recommendation imposing life with no chance for parole for 20 years for the murder and a 10 year concurrent term for the assault.
Regina Worldwide Park will remain under court ordered protection while a third party reviews its restructuring plan. Judge Justice Dennis Ball extended protection under the Companies Creditors Arrangement Act to Aug 3 despite doubts the plan can succeed. The plan seeks 9 million in capital to expand production and settle creditor issues, with about 5 million to double output.
In Ottawa a Liberal threat to limit debate on Bill C 38 loomed as the Senate neared the final phase. Government leader in the Senate Jack Austin said he would invoke time allocation to push a vote this week and rejected calls for more debate. He said there were no new issues or positions and that Canadians had drawn their conclusions.
