Edmonton McClung MLA Mitchell, Liberal house leader, seeks the job along with Calgary MLA Frank Bruseker. A provincewide telephone vote will decide the new leader with a July 30 Red Deer meeting set to finalize ballot date and rules. A $250,000 campaign spending cap is expected. Mitchell, born in Ottawa in 1961, ran the Principal Group before politics and later led Alberta federal and intergovernmental affairs.

Sgt. Darryl Smith of Medicine Hat RCMP said a fourth soldier died at Canadian Forces Base Suffield today. Investigators await cause and next of kin notification while RCMP probe the sudden death.
