Immigration hearings opened in Halifax for 174 Asians smuggled into Canada eight days after a freighter dropped them in southern Nova Scotia. Twelve were to appear today to determine refugee status, but the session paused as a CBC lawyer argued for media access and only one refugee had appeared before the board before adjournment.
A Gallup poll shows 36 percent of Canadians believe Canada US relations are drifting apart while 34 percent say they are getting closer. In the United States 31 percent see improvement, 28 percent deterioration, nine percent no change, and 32 percent no opinion. The Canadian results rely on 1,040 in home interviews conducted early May.
An anonymous caller claimed pranksters changed the Hollywood sign to Ollywood in Los Angeles. LAPD Hollywood division officer Gene Ferone noted the alteration covered by black plastic, with the call letting AP know at about 4 30 a m local time.

More than 300 people fill a small church in Comfort Texas to grieve 10 teens swept to their deaths by the Guadalupe River while searchers, including National Guard, resume Friday for John Bankston 17 last of the group. He helped others reach safety as a bus and van were overtaken near Pot O Gold Ranch.
A federal indictment charges 12 officers and three associates on the midnight shift with racketeering civil rights abuses and drug trafficking in Miami. The probe cites bribes from bar owners, protection for dealers, and a 1985 marijuana and cocaine interception on the Miami River. Former officer Rodolfo Arias testified, claiming about $1 million in narcotics profits plus possible double that for others.
